History of Lone Star Park Race Track

In November 1987, Texans voted in favor of the return of pari-mutuel horse racing to the State.

A huge crowd of 21,754 attended Lone Star Park's grand opening on April 17, 1997, nearly ten years after the historic vote. They wagered more than $1.4 million. Since that day, more than 8.8 million customers have passed through the gates of Lone Star Park race track and placed bets in excess of $1.7 billion.

Lone Star Park race track staged one of the most successful inaugural seasons in American racing history. The average daily handle, or money bet, during the inaugural season ($2,394,840 by on and off-track patrons) ranks No. 1 among all major U.S. race tracks built since 1970. The hefty wagering figure was well ahead of those recorded at major thoroughbred and harness racing tracks.

As a follow-up to its impressive first season, Lone Star Park race track in 1998 became the first race track in modern history to increase its attendance in its second year of operation.

Lone Star Park race track began Phase I of its $7.8 million expansion plan on November 20, 2002 - a phase that would directly benefit Lone Star Park's regular group of horsemen. Completed prior to the start of the 2003 thoroughbred season were two 50-stall barns (200' x 80'), a 96-stall multipurpose quarantine barn (130' x 260'), six stable area dormitory buildings and two recreation rooms.

Lone Star Park race track's hosting of the prestigious Breeders Cup Championship in October 2004 serves as a shining testament to the race track's undisputed status as Texas' top horse racing track.
